Crawley sign off in style

Torquay 1 Crawley 2.

Crawley signed off the season in style against a Torquay side with one eye on the play-offs.

Manager Steve Evans was full of praise for his team as they pulled off a deserved win in a scrappy game.

He said: "We could have had five or six.

"If it hadn't been for their goalkeeper putting in a man-of-the-match performance we would have had more.

"We've delivered a mid-table finish. It has been a fantastic season but we've got a lot of work to do in the summer."

Evans demanded a reaction from his players after their 4-0 defeat at the hands of Halifax, and he got what he asked for.

In pacy forward Tyrone Thompson, Crawley had the game's liveliest player, and he was just one of the Town players to be denied by home keeper Simon Rayner.

Thompson teased the home defence with his pace early on, and Rayner was given his first test in the 14th minute when Ryan Hall spotted him off his line and tried his luck from 35 yards. Only the fingertips of the back-pedalling home keeper stopped the ball from dipping in.

But Hall was not to be denied, and two minutes later he opened the scoring.

Torquay failed to deal with a corner and the ball fell to Hall 20 yards out. His first effort was blocked, but he pounced on the rebound and drilled home a right-foot shot which gave Rayner no chance.

The visitors started the second half as they had ended the first, and were on top for long spells. Cook burst through on a pass by Hall in the 46th minute. Once again Rayner spread himself to take the sting off the shot and home defender Mark Ellis cleared the ball off the line.

And despite using all three substitutes, Torquay were unable to find a way through a Crawley defence in which Bradley Thomas and Kieran Murphy did some outstanding work.

The visitors finally got the second goal after 85 minutes with a superb finish by Cook. He was put through by a fine pass from Bulman, then kept his head to shoot low into the corner past Rayner's left hand. Sills handed Torquay a lifeline a minute later, scoring with a glancing header from a Danny Stevens cross which just beat Bayes' despairing dive, but the visitors were not to be denied.

What do you think?

Not sure what game you were watching but I presume The Argus did not send anyone. Did they, honestly now ?
It was not 'scrappy'. Crawley played an excellent game, Torquay were playing to win, even using all their subs reasonably early on, they just couldn't. It was well worth the journey. Had you been there you could also have reported the good spirit between all the fans. The players giving their shirts to the supporters at the end of the game as all the fans (Torquay & Crawley) ran onto the pitch and best of all the moment when manager Steve Evans, with a high ball coming straight at him, managed to chest it down & tap it back in with great control, followed by a roar of applause from the crowd !
Perhaps The Argus can get their act together for next season and have some fair, balanced and neutral reporting on Crawley Town games.

Totally agree James - they saved the best until last, despite having a very small squad of players - Steve Evans control was pure delight and his responce to the crowd was brilliant. We could have had 4/5, their keeper kept them in the game and couldn't be faulted with either goals Crawley scored. Yes Torquay put out a slightly weaker side, but they wanted to win - now they have a difficult game against Exeter - personally I hope Exeter win, so that we can have another great weekend away. Bring on the Sussex Senior Cup Final against Brighton.
