Bristol City have made their move for Crawley star Kyle McFadzean – after deciding against a bid for Lewis Dunk.
The Championship strugglers are understood to have made an undisclosed six-figure bid for in-demand McFadzean.
City boss Derek McInnes must shore up a defence which has yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
He is targeting younger players with potential to improve and is believed to have sounded out the Seagulls about Dunk.
Gus Poyet is keen to hold on to his defender who is under contract until the summer of 2015.
