Crawley boss John Gregory has vowed to stand by blundering goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown.

Ashdown was at fault for two of Peterborough’s goals in their 4-1 victory at the Checkatrade.com Stadium on Saturday.

That followed the former Portsmouth keeper’s mistake which cost a goal in the 2-2 draw at Coventry the previous weekend.

Gregory said: “People make mistakes and that was a howler without any question.

“Unfortunately we suffered the consequences but I still support Jamie. He is a terrific lad and a terrific goalkeeper.

“When a goalkeeper makes a mistake it gets highlighted but when a striker misses an open goal like Izale (McLeod) did from the corner set-piece it kind of gets forgotten.

“I am afraid that is the life of a goalkeeper but I will support and defend him until I am blue in the face.”

Ashdown spilt a cross which led to Michael Smith’s equaliser and then passed the ball straight to Marcus Maddison for Peterborough’s third.

Defender Lanre Oyebanjo said: “He doesn’t need to apologise. We win as a team and lose as a team. We all lost the game. There were 11 of us on the field and we take that as a team.”
