Gwion Edwards is hoping November can be another month to remember after coming of age in October.

The Crawley winger failed to find the net during nine games in August and September but his season took off in sensational fashion last month as he scored four in five matches as well as receiving a surprise call up to the Wales squad for the first time.

Edwards believes he has made a significant step forward over the past four weeks and will be looking to continue his dream run today by helping Reds overcome Crewe Alexandra at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

Edwards said: “It has been going really well lately. I’m not sure what the reason is for me scoring so regularly but you’ve got to make the most of it when you are on such a good run.

“I thought I did all right at the start of the season and came close to scoring a few times. It just didn’t happen for me but as soon as the first goal went in it gave me a lot of confidence and I’ve gone from there.

“When you have confidence it makes a big difference and getting called up by Wales was also a big boost to my self-belief even if I was a little bit disappointed not to make my debut in the end.

“Now when I get a chance to shoot or I’m in a good position to score I will try to take it whereas before I might have tried to pass instead. Even if I am a long way out I’m willing to have a go now.

“Starting every week has really helped my game a lot too. I’m going out on the pitch full of confidence at the moment and when you are in that frame of mind you have a much better chance of playing well.”

Edwards is aware that his excellent form this season means he is unable to fly under the radar anymore.

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson recently highlighted the former Swansea winger as Crawley’s main threat and opposition teams are beginning to make special plans to subdue him.

The 21-year-old is confident he can cope with being a marked man as he sets his sights on taking his goal tally into double figures this season.

Edwards added: “Some games I do find the opposition will double up on me or in the second half the winger will track back with me more. I don’t mind that as it shows I am doing something right.

“When it happens the important thing is that I mix it up a bit and not try to keep taking them on all the time. You’ve got to adapt and pass the ball a bit more because there should be more space for other people.

“Hopefully I can keep on scoring even if I am marked a bit more as at the start of the season I set myself the target of reaching double figures. As a winger my main aim is to provide assists but if I can score a few as well that is a bonus.”

Edwards was only called up as a late replacement to the Wales squad for their European Championship qualifiers against Bosnia and Cyprus last month due to a series of injuries.

His form for Crawley is sure to have impressed Wales boss Chris Coleman, however, and if he can produce a few more eye-catching displays over the next couple of weeks it would boost his chances of keeping his place for the crucial trip to Belgium on November 16.

“I’m not really thinking about Wales to be honest,” said Edwards. “Obviously it is in the back of my mind but I am trying to concentrate on playing well for Crawley because if I do that then everything else should follow.”
