Manager John Gregory questioned his own position after Crawley were held to a 1-1 draw at home to rock-bottom Crewe.

Gregory was so frustrated after the final whistle that he admitted he would think about whether he was the right man to take Crawley forward over the next few days.

The former Aston Villa boss has only been in charge at the Checkatrade.com Stadium for 11 months but has been unable to inspire the play-off challenge he said was his aim when he replaced Richie Barker.

Gregory said: “I want it to be better than this. I can’t handle the inability to win games that you should.

“If my players play to their best every week we should threaten the top six but at the moment I am getting too many inconsistent performances and that bothers me enormously. It is not good enough.

“We need to beat teams like Crewe with respect to them so I have to ask whether it is me. You should always look at yourself so maybe I will have a long hard look at what I am doing in my job at the moment as I’m not getting as much out of these as I should.

“I need to get more consistent performances out of my players and it might well be me so I need to look at myself in that respect.”

Gregory admitted Reds were “abysmal” in the first half and were fortunate not to trail by more than just George Cooper’s 19th minute strike.

Izale McLeod rescued a point with his seventh goal of the season in the second half to stretch Crawley’s unbeaten run to three games.

Gregory added: “I was delighted to get something from the game after a pretty abysmal first 45 minutes.

“It was an extremely disappointing 45 minutes and we were fortunate to get in just 1-0 down at half-time.

“We made changes at half-time and it seemed to reinvigorate us. Izale scored a great goal and at 1-1 it looked like there was only going to be one winner.”
