Dean Saunders admits he is completely in the dark over his Crawley Town future.

Saunders has masterminded a remarkable turnaround in Crawley’s fortunes since taking over as manager on an interim basis in December when John Gregory stepped down to undergo major heart surgery. Reds have won five of their last eight games to climb out of the relegation zone and will bid to take another step closer to securing their League One survival at home to Gillingham today.

Saunders’ contract is due to expire at the end of the season with the club insisting no decision will be made on the managerial situation until the summer when the state of Gregory’s health will be reassessed.

Saunders said: “I haven’t discussed anything with the board yet so I don’t know what they are thinking. As far as I know the situation hasn’t changed at all from when I took the job.

“I have not had time to breathe since I came to Crawley to be honest. All my focus has been on the next training session or watching DVDs of the opposition so I haven’t really thought about next season.

“I just want to do my best for the club and then see what happens. I will have a look at it when the time is right but at the moment all my concentration is on trying to keep the club in League One.”

Crawley looked doomed a few months ago when they were stranded at the bottom of the table, five points adrift of safety, but Saunders has refused to take the credit for their revival.

He added: “The whole club should be proud of the players because their level of commitment and the effort they have put in has been fantastic. I can tell them what to do but they are the ones who have to go out there and do it.

“I’ve given them a lot of information and advice and they have taken it all in their strides. It has involved a lot of hard work on the training ground and many of the things we have done haven’t been much fun but we are seeing the rewards now.”
