Former Albion striker Shamir Fenelon has joined hometown club Crawley Town on a one-year contract.

Fenelon was released by the Seagulls at the end of last season having made just three first team appearances.

The 20-year-old is the second signing made by Reds boss Mark Yates in the space of 12 hours following the arrival of Luke Rooney.

Yates has now added four players to his squad since taking over the reins at the Checkatrade.com Stadium after securing the services of Simon Walton and Joe McNerney last week.

Yates said: “I think Shamir has got a lot of ability. He’s got raw pace and if anything he needs to be a bit more selfish because he gets into a lot of good goalscoring positions and is a real team player.

“I think he’s being quite brave in a way. A lot of clubs were interested in him but he’s a local lad and sometimes that brings its own pressure and extra expectation. He’s determined to show what he’s about and I’m sure our fans will warm to him.”

Fenelon had loan spells at Rochdale, Tranmere and Dagenham last season and also spent time at Torquay United the previous year.

He was called up by the Republic of Ireland under-21s to play in a European Championship qualifier against Andorra last month.

Fenelon said: “When I spoke to Mark and Jimmy (Dack) I knew I wanted to come to Crawley. Obviously it’s my local team – I went to school at Thomas Bennett and I played for the club’s old youth teams from the age of 9-14 – which makes it even better.

“I think I have a lot to offer and I’m really looking forward to joining up with the other lads and then showing the Crawley fans what I can do when the pre-season games start.”
