Josh Yorwerth believes Crawley Town can surge up the League Two table after discovering the winning formula.

Reds welcome York City to the Checkatrade.com Stadium today bidding for their fifth win in their last seven league matches.

Mark Yates’ side remain 17th despite their turnaround in fortunes but Wales under-21 international Yorweth is confident they can continue moving in the right direction.

And the Ipswich centre-back, who extended his loan spell at Crawley until December 29 this week, believes Reds even have the potential to challenge for the play-offs.

Yorwerth said: “We are only seven points off the play-offs now so why not? I think we definitely have the squad to do it.

“There are players on the bench who could easily start but the players in the team are proving they are worthy of the shirt at the moment.

“It is all about sticking together, from the boys in the team to those on the bench and even the four or five not in the matchday squad. As long as we stick together I think we have very good chance of reaching those play-offs come end of the season.

“If we win on Saturday I think we can jump three or four places so we’ve just got to try to keep getting results and moving up the table.

“It is all about going on a run. If we can get three or four consecutive wins under belt then all of a sudden we’ll be in a good position, the confidence will grow and we’ll start showing we can play some good football as well.”

The play-offs would have seemed like pie in the sky when Yorwerth arrived on a month’s loan from Ipswich at the end of September with Reds reeling from four defeats in a row.

The 20-year-old helped secure a 3-0 win at Newport on his debut and victories over Leyton Orient, Luton and Hartlepool have followed.

And he has thanked Yates for putting his trust in young players like him and fellow loanee Mitch Hancox as they learn their trade.

Yorwerth added: “A lot of managers these days don’t trust young players. In the Premier League and Championship it is more forwards and wingers as managers can take a risk on them more than they can defenders.

“It is great that Mick McCarthy, pictured, at Ipswich gave me an opportunity in the Capital One Cup and now Mark Yates is giving me the chance to play games here.

“I didn’t have that at Cardiff as there was no opportunity for youngsters to push through.

“I didn’t even get the chance to train with the first team so I’m thankful for working under gaffers like Mark and Mick.”

Reds will be without Gavin Tomlin, Lanre Oyebanjo and Joe McNerney due to injury today as they take on a York side who not won in nine league games and sacked manager Russ Wilcox on Monday.

“I don’t know much about York but anything can happen in this league,” added Yorwerth.

“We beat Newport 3-0 and they went away to Bristol Rovers in the next game and won 4-1 so you can’t take anything for granted.”
