An inexperienced Sussex side ended Nottinghamshire’s 100% record in the YB40 with an impressive victory at Trent Bridge.

Sussex rested a number of key players with their chances of progressing in the competition almost non-existent but still managed to triumph by 50 runs.

Mike Yardy and Chris Jordan were both left out with Matthew Hobden making his debut the day after signing his first pro deal at Sussex and Andrew Miller making only his second one-day appearance for the club.

Matt Machan and Ed Joyce were the mainstays of Sussex’s innings but a total of 223-9 did not seem sufficient against a powerful looking Notts batting line-up.

Samit Patel and James Taylor appeared to be guiding the Outlaws to an eighth win from eight games but they lost their last eight wickets for just 73 runs to be bowled out for 173 in the 36th over.

Chris Liddle led the way with 3-21 with Miller and Will Beer picking up two wickets apiece while there was also a maiden scalp for Hobden.

The victory does little to improve Sussex’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals but gives them a boost ahead of their Championship clash with Notts tomorrow.

Luke Wright and Chris Nash got Sussex off to a flying start once again after Ed Joyce had won the toss and elected to bat.

The pair, who had put on 194 in the defeat to Kent on Wednesday, took 32 from the opening four overs before Wright was cramped for space by Gurney and edged to Read behind the stumps for 24.

Rory Hamilton-Brown’s disappointing season continued as he was deceived by a slower ball from Gurney and lobbed a catch to mid-off having made just two.

Nash looked set to make his third half century in his last four innings until he gave Steven Mullaney a return catch after making 40 from 41 balls.

Sussex were in a spot of bother at that point on 86-3 from 15 overs but Machan and Joyce set about getting the Sharks back on track with a partnership of 90 from 100 balls.

Joyce was given a life when he had made 20 as Michael Lumb put down a fairly comfortable catch at mid-wicket off Mullaney.

It proved costly for Notts as Joyce went on to bring up his 50 off 60 balls before being stumped by Chris Read as he gave Samit Patel the charge.

Machan found his feet after an uncertain start and launched Mullaney and David Hussey for sixes on his way to 50 off 55 balls.

The Scotland international began to run out of partners, however, as Joe Gatting went for a duck and Ben Brown made just four.

Machan became Gurney’s fourth victim as he was bowled by a leg stump yorker for 68 from 69 balls with Gurney getting rid of Chris Liddle in similar fashion from the very next ball.

Will Beer hit 20 from 18 balls to boost Sussex’s score in the closing overs with Hobden being caught on the boundary off the final ball as the Sharks posted a score of 223-9.

Sussex needed early wickets to give themselves a chance and they got them courtesy of inexperienced opening duo Hobden and Andrew Miller.

Hobden made the initial breakthrough to claim Lumb as his maiden wicket for Sussex with Alex Hales following shortly after as he sliced a drive off Miller to Hamilton-Brown at backward point.

Patel and James Taylor put on 71 for the third wicket to put Notts in a strong position but the departure of Patel for 45 prompted Notts to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Liddle ‘s introduction to the attack proved key as he got rid of Patel and Rikki Wessels while Beer claimed the scalp of David Hussey for 14.

Chris Read smashed Beer for one big six before being removed by Luke Wright and when Taylor was trapped lbw by Nash for a patient 48 the game was almost up.

Beer completed fine figures of 2-37 from seven overs by having Ajmal Shazad caught well in the deep by Hamilton-Brown while Liddle picked up his third scalp by bowling Jake Ball.

Miller completed the victory with four overs still remaining as Gurney offered Hamilton-Brown his fourth catch of the night.
