Ashar Zaidi made his highest first class score for nearly five years as Sussex stretched their lead over Lancashire on the third morning at Hove.

Zaidi put on 104 with Chris Jordan for the eighth wicket as Sussex moved from 341-7 overnight to 434 all out at lunch.

Zaidi has endured a tough season at Hove and was only called up for this match at late notice after James Tredwell’s loan deal fell through on Monday.

The former Pakistan A international has made the most of his chance as he followed up his Championship best figures of 3-36 by making 66.

Zaidi brought up his half century – which came off 88 balls – in style as he lofted Simon Kerrigan for over long on for six.

He found good support from Jordan who celebrated winning an England central contact by contributing 41 – his highest score of the season.

Jordan was denied a half century when he was run out attempting a second run by a good throw from Tom Smith.

Zaidi’s innings came to an ugly end as he slogged Kerrigan straight to the man at deep mid wicket while the leg-spinner picked up his third wicket when he had Lewis Hatchett caught at square leg for 11.
