Sussex remain hopeful that Luke Wells will commit his future to the club.

Wells has yet to agree a new deal at Hove sparking speculation he may look to leave the county for a new challenge.

The 23-year-old from Eastbourne came through the academy ranks at Sussex and has established himself as a regular in the Championship team over the last three seasons.

He scored more than 1,000 first class runs for the first time this summer despite enduring an inconsistent season but has grown increasingly frustrated by being unable to hold down a place in Sussex’s limited overs sides.

Coach Mark Robinson admits finding a way to give Wells more opportunities in white ball cricket probably holds the key to the former England under-19 international putting pen to paper.

Wells has played 67 first class games since making his debut for Sussex against Worcestershire in September 2010 but has only made 18 limited overs appearances in the same space of time.

The former St Bede’s pupil’s struggles with the white ball are highlighted by the fact he averages under nine with the bat in 13 List A games and just 3.60 in five Twenty20 matches.

Robinson said: “Things are progressing with Luke. It has not helped with his agent being away but we’re hoping he will stay because he is a quality player.

“He is a young man with a lot of potential to grow. He has got great ambition to play in all forms which is something we want as well so it is a case of making sure we can get a plan of how to achieve that which is agreeable to everyone.”
