Lewis Hatchett has been rewarded for his best ever season for Sussex with a new two-year deal.

The left-arm seamer played eight Championship matches as well as eight in both the NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One Day Cup, taking 42 wickets in total.

The 24-year-old from Upper Beeding was only given a one-year deal last winter having struggled to establish himself in the first team since his first class debut in 2010.

He will now be at Hove until the end of the 2016 season and will battle it out with Steve Magoffin, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, James Anyon and Ajmal Shazad for the four frontline seamer spots in four-day cricket next season.

Hatchett said: “I’m delighted to have signed for another two years and am looking forward to trying to build on what I achieved last season.

“We’ve got a good crop of fast bowlers at the club with Tymal and Ajmal coming in so I know I am going to have to continue to improve to keep my place in the team.

“With the bowlers we have got we could have a good rotation policy too which will ensure we don’t get as tired as we did last year and enable us to perform at our best for longer.”

Sussex coach Mark Robinson said: “Lewis had a breakthrough season last year, playing in all competitions and is in a great place to really kick on now. We’re looking forward to seeing him progress over the next two years.”
