WOMEN may be wearing bikini tops on The Sun’s page three now but does that mean the publication, and the media as a whole, has reformed its sexist ways?
No More Page 3, the campaign group born in Hove, argues topless women should not feature next to news. They have said the fact women are now covered up in bikinis is only a starting point and are still urging the media to stop featuring women on the basis of their allure and looks.
This does mark quite a historical change in The Sun’s profile but considering how long it has taken to get to this point it does question how women are perceived across the board in news, television, films and music.
MP Caroline Lucas says women are constantly plagued by gender discrimination throughout their life and given the campaign group’s pledge to continue fighting sexism it looks like there is more work to be done.
But in a world where the internet provides endless images beyond the taste of anything that was ever on page 3, is this a hollow victory?
