Luke Wright has been handed the task of revitalising Sussex's Twenty20 fortunes after being named captain for next season.

Wright will take over from Ed Joyce who skippered the Sharks in all formats of the game last summer and has been preferred to vice-captain Chris Nash, who performed the role in 2013.

Sussex have failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition for the last two years, winning just seven of 24 matches in that time.

Wright said: “I am really excited about putting my stamp on the T20 side and hopefully getting Sussex back to where we should be, which is competing for trophies.

“We made some exciting new signing this winter and there are some very talented younger players so I am very excited about what this season could bring.”

Wright is Sussex's most experienced Twenty20 player having played 51 times for his country in the format and helped England lift the World T20 in 2010.

The 29-year-old has played in both the IPL and Big Bash as well as the Twenty20 tournaments in New Zealand, Bangladesh and South Africa, racking up more than 200 games in total in the format.

Sussex coach Mark Robinson said: “Luke is a proven international player at this level and has gained a wealth of expertise and experience from playing this format all around the world.

“It will allow Ed Joyce to recharge his batteries mentally in what is a busy period of the summer.”
