Luke Wright is expected to be fit to play in Sussex’s opening County Championship game of the season despite suffering an injury scare yesterday.

Wright was forced to retire hurt after taking a blow to the elbow on the second day of Sussex’s final warm-up game against Surrey at Hove.

The former England all-rounder had made an entertaining 55 when he was struck by a short ball and left the field after receiving treatment.

Wright did not come out to field during Surrey’s 30-over innings and did not bat again in Sussex’s second innings but is not a doubt for Sunday’s opening game at Hampshire.

That will come as a major relief with Sussex’s plans for the new season already disrupted by injuries to a number of key players.

Rory Hamilton-Brown was forced to retire during the winter due to a wrist problem and Matt Prior’s comeback from Achilles surgery is still some way off.

James Anyon has also been ruled out of the first month of the campaign following a knee operation while Lewis Hatchett has suffered a back injury which will sideline him for at least five weeks.

The absence of Anyon and Hatchett prompted Sussex to take a look at two promising young bowlers at Hove yesterday as they decided to rest new-ball duo Steve Magoffin and Ajmal Shahzad.

Former Worcestershire seamer Nick Harrison picked up the wicket of Zafar Ansari – superbly caught by Mike Yardy at first slip - as Surrey made 84-2 from their 30 overs on the second day.

Harrison, 23, played three first class and seven List A games for Worcestershire but was released at the end of last season having failed to make an appearance for two years.

Oliver Robinson – who joined Hampshire last summer after being sacked by Yorkshire for unprofessional behaviour - was also given an opportunity to impress but went wicketless.

Robinson, 21, came through the ranks at Kent before moving to Headingley in 2013 where he made seven Twenty20 appearances and played four List A games before coach Jason Gillespie lost patience with his attitude.

Apart from the injury to Wright there were plenty of positives for Sussex yesterday with Luke Wells and Ben Brown both spending valuable time in the middle.

Wells top scored with 78 having resumed on 65 overnight while Brown scored 41 as Sussex made 262-4 from their 60 overs.

Ansari top scored with 33 in Surrey’s second innings with Vikram Solanki making an unbeaten 20 and Rory Burns hitting 20 before being dismissed by Chris Nash.

Sussex then batted for a further 30 overs with Brown impressing once again by making 59 before retiring – meaning he had scored 100 runs in the day without being dismissed.

Harry Finch finished unbeaten on 22 as Sussex closed on 137-3 with Tymal Mills being bowled for 13 from the final ball of the day.
