Chris Jordan is determined to be part of a new era with England after securing a thrilling victory for Sussex yesterday.

Jordan hit the winning runs by smashing Boyd Rankin for six to wrap up a dramatic one-wicket win over Warwickshire at Hove.

The 26-year-old was only available to play his first Championship game of the season for Sussex after being left out of the England side for the first Test against New Zealand.

England confirmed the appointment of Trevor Bayliss as their new head coach yesterday and Jordan is keen to prove he should be part of the team for this summer’s Ashes.

Jordan, who will link up with the England squad today ahead of the second Test at Headingly on Friday, said: “Obviously I was disappointed not to be playing for England but as a professional it is something you have to get over very quickly.

“I was delighted to be able to come back here and play my part in an extraordinary game. To go out and get the win was a special moment and one I will remember for a while.

“I always love coming back to Sussex so my aim is to continue doing the good things that have got me where I am and hopefully that will mean I get more chances with England.”

Coach Mark Robinson hailed the character of his side after they battled back from 45-5 to chase down a victory target of 190 on a difficult wicket.

Sussex were waiting to hear last night whether the umpires would report the pitch to the ECB but Robinson said: “It wasn’t the wicket we wanted or expected but there were mitigating circumstances because of the (overcast) conditions so I just hope the umpires show common sense.”
