Sussex suffered another batting collapse as they were bowled out before tea on the opening day of their Championship clash with Hampshire at Hove.

A partnership of 115 between Luke Wright and Chris Nash had seen Sussex recover from 87-4 but they lost their last six wickets for 49 runs as they were dismissed for 251.

Nash fell two runs short of his half century when he pulled a long hop from James Vince to the fielder on the square leg boundary.

Wright departed from the next ball for 59 when he edged a ball which turned sharply from Danny Briggs to Sean Ervine at slip.

Ollie Robinson became Gareth Berg’s fourth victim when he edged to first slip having made six and Ben Brown followed it similar fashion to Fidel Edwards.

Jackson Bird wrapped up the innings by removing debutant Fynn Hudson-Prentice – who looped a catch to mid-off when he mis-timed a pull - for 15 while Steve Magoffin became the seventh man to be caught in the slips having made 11.

Sussex will be disappointed at another poor batting display after skipper Ed Joyce won the toss and elected to bat.

Mike Yardy and Luke Wells made encouraging start before the introduction of Berg swung the morning session in Hampshire’s favour.

Berg dismissed Wells for 17 with only his fourth ball down the hill and followed it up by removing Yardy for 41 and Joyce for nine – all to catches in the slips.

Bird overcame a poor start with the ball on his Championship debut Hampshire to trap Matt Machan lbw for 13 with a ball which kept low.
