Steve Magoffin produced a scintillating spell with the new ball to give Sussex a glimmer of hope of beating Championship leaders Durham at Arundel.

Magoffin struck four times in his first three overs to reduce Durham to 13-4 in their second innings after Sussex had been bowled out for 201 – a deficit of 100.

The Australian removed Michael Stoneman and Keaton Jennings inside four balls before picking up the wickets of Paul Collingwood and Mark Richardson.

Durham rebuilt after those early setbacks to reach tea on 60-4 with Scott Borthwick unbeaten on 31 and Gordon Muchall 25.

Sussex had needed 17 more runs at the start of the afternoon session to avoid the follow-on but achieved it without too many alarms.

Magoffin hit John Hastings for four to take Sussex past the follow-on mark of 152 before he became Chris Rushworth’s sixth victim when he was caught at slip for 14.

Loanees George Dockerell and Tim Linley put on 40 for the last wicket – the biggest partnership of the innings - to earn Sussex a solitary batting point.

Dockerell finished unbeaten on 37 with Linley making ten before he mistimed a pull off Graham Onions and was caught at square leg.

Sussex needed early wickets to keep themselves in the game and Magoffin delivered in his first over.

Stoneman lasted just two balls before he edged the Australian to Luke Wright at third slip and two balls later Jennings feathered Magoffin to Ben Brown behind the stumps to leave Durham 1-2.

Magoffin knocked out Paul Collingwood’s middle stump with his ninth ball and bowled Richardson in his fourth over.

Sussex scented blood at that stage but the lack of a third seamer due to the injury of Ajmal Shahzad let Durham off the hook as Borthwick and Muchall steadied the ship.
