Gordon Muchall made his first century of the season as Durham looked to bat Sussex completely out of the game on the third morning at Arundel.
Muchall put on a partnership of 116 with Paul Coughlin for the seventh wicket as Durham moved from 168-6 overnight to 303-7 at lunch – a lead of 403. Luke Wells eventually ended Muchall’s four and a half hour innings when he trapped him lbw for 115 just before the new ball was taken.
Coughlin remains unbeaten on 57 at lunch and has been joined by John Hastings who has raced to 22 not out from just 20 balls.
