Sussex coach Mark Robinson has urged the England selectors to take another look at Luke Wright.

Wright blasted a brilliant unbeaten 111 to help Sussex pull off a remarkable victory in the NatWest T20 Blast at Gloucestershire on Friday night.

The 30-year-old has won 101 caps for his country in limited overs cricket but has not featured since March 2011 and Robinson believes he deserves to be considered again.

Robinson said: “It was funny as Luke couldn’t time the ball for his first 50 runs but once he got going there was no stopping him.

“As a one-day player he is feared but he showed at Edgbaston yesterday that he is also capable of playing with great discipline. He makes big hundreds in four-day cricket and is a dangerous player in one-day cricket.

“He is a different player to the one he was when he last played for England so they need to look at him slightly differently. He has matured and improved but it depends what direction England want to go.”

Robinson believes taking over as Twenty20 captain at the start of this season has been a factor in Wright’s impressive form this season.

He is averaging 53 in the NatWest T20 Blast – only Sam Northeast and Max Klinger have scored more runs – and just under 40 in the County Championship.

He added: “I have been lucky in my time as Sussex coach to have worked with captains where leadership has brought the best out of them and taken their game to another level.

“That was the case with Chris Adams and Mike Yardy and also with Ed Joyce and it seems to be the case with Luke as well.”
