Matt Machan offered some resistance as Sussex battled to avoid defeat inside three days against Nottinghamshire at Horsham.

Machan made an unbeaten 85 to help Sussex reach tea on 153-3, still requiring another 204 runs just to make Notts bat again.

The left-hander put on 92 with skipper Ed Joyce for the second wicket before Notts enjoyed their first success of the afternoon session.

Joyce had been dropped on 31 in the slips off Harry Gurney but the same bowler got his reward when he squared the Ireland international up and had him caught at gully.

Chris Nash was another who failed to make the most of a reprieve when he was put down by Brett Hutton on two at third slip off the unlucky Gurney.

Hutton made amends by trapping Nash lbw as he tried to whip him off his pads for 13.
