Mark Robinson insists there is no lack of fight from his faltering Sussex side.

But he felt skills let them down in a four-wicket defeat to Nottinghamshire at Hove today.

Sussex face an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages of the Royal London One-Day Cup after Notts got home comfortably with 22 balls to spare.

Sussex boss Robinson said: "We've shown enough fight and commitment in the game but unfortunately our skill level hasn't been good enough and a couple of unfortunate decisions have hurt us."

Sussex set 282-9 after racing to 96 without loss off 12 overs.

Openers Chris Nash (49) and Luke Wright (40) were both caught behind by Chris Read off the bowling of Jake Ball.

Read took a county record six catches and Ball grabbed three big wickets for eight runs in one sensational blast.

A late flurry from Will Beer (42) and Alfonso Thomas (an undefeated 32) boosted Sussex's tally and Thomas then pinned Riki Weasels lbw with the first ball of the reply.

But Notts recovered and were always ahead of the asking rate as James Taylor made 51 and Brendan Taylor followed with 62.

Steven Mullaney finished the job with 42 not out after a brief wobble.

Robinson added: "It was a very hard game to judge. The quality at times wasn't great from both teams. "Both teams bowled poorly up front.

"Jake Ball bowled an exceptional spell which took the guts out of us a little bit. We did well to get the score we did in the end."

Ollie Robinson missed the game with a hamstring niggle.
