Luke Wright has urged Sussex to spoil Yorkshire’s party to end a testing season on a high.

Sussex go into their final Championship game at Headingley today needing eight points to guarantee their place in division one for another season.

A draw plus three bonus points would be good enough to avoid relegation even if Hampshire were to pick up maximum points from their game at Nottinghamshire.

But Wright wants Sussex to sign off with a win against a Yorkshire side who will welcome back England stars Adil Rashid, Jonny Bairstow and Liam Plunkett and will parade the Championship trophy in front of their home fans.

Wright, pictured below, said: “I don’t think you ever go into a four-day game looking for a draw. You always start a game aiming to win it but if we end up drawing or even losing and still stay up then I won’t be complaining!

“It’s been a horrendous season with seven bowlers being injured at some stage and not many teams would have been able to cope with that. Every game it has been hard to take 20 wickets with the guys we’ve had out so to stay up would be a good achievement.

“We started the summer with a lot of optimism but the injuries affected us in all formats. It’s been a real slog at times but if we can stay up it will underline the character we have got in the team.”

Mike Yardy will play his final game for Sussex after 16 years with the county and Wright says retaining their division one status would be a fitting way for the former England international to bow out.

Wright said: “Mike has been a brilliant servant for Sussex and it was great to see him score a century in his final match at Hove last week. Hopefully he has got one more innings in him as it would be lovely if he could play a significant role in keeping us up.”
