Sussex's hopes of securing their Championship safety today suffered a blow as they lost five wickets before lunch at Headingley.

Having bowled Yorkshire out for 251 - taking the final three wickets in the morning for the addition of just ten runs - Sussex stumbled to 79-5 in reply.

Steve Magoffin and Chris Jordan made light work of wrapping up the Yorkshire innings with the new ball.

Tim Bresnan was caught at first slip by Jordan off Magoffin and in the next over Jordan had Jack Brooks taken at second slip by Mike Yardy. Magoffin wrapped things up to finish with 4-57 as Liam Plunkett drove him to mid-on.

Sussex were soon in desperate trouble as Ed Joyce edged Brooks to Jonny Bairstow in the second over and with the first ball of the next over Jordan - a surprise choice as opener - drove back a return catch to Ryan Sidebottom.

Matt Machan went for his shots until he edged a drive at Brooks and was caught behind for 26 and Bresnan got in on the act when Chris Nash provided Bairstow with his third catch.

Sussex continued to attack but to no avail, Luke Wright being next to go, edging Plunkett to Alex Lees at first slip.

The only good news for Sussex came from Trent Bridge where Hampshire slipped to 113-5 in reply to Nottinghamshire's total of 340 at lunch in a game they must win if they are to climb above Sussex and out of the relegation zone.
