Sussex's relegation fears grew as Yorkshire continued to build a formidable lead at Headingley.

The champions reached tea on 214-5 to lead by 217 in a game in which Sussex must avoid defeat if they are to guarantee their Championship survival.

If Sussex lose then they are relying on Hampshire failing to win but they had reduced Nottinghamshire to 181-8 - a lead of 195.

Yorkshire began the third day on 55-1 with Adam Lyth on 16 and Gary Ballance 39 and both batsmen were out when they chopped into their stumps, Lyth against Steve Magoffin and Lyth cutting at Lewis Hatchett.

Andrew Gale went on to pass 1,000 runs for the season in a partnership of 67 with Jonny Bairstow which was interrupted by a rain break.

Bairstow was out lbw to Chris Jordan for 36 while Jack Leaning made just nine before being caught by Jordan at slip cutting Chris Liddle.

Gale reached tea on 65 while Adil Rashid is unbeaten on ten.
