Mark Robinson has signalled his intention to continue as Sussex coach.

Robinson’s position has come under scrutiny from some supporters after Sussex were relegated to division two of the Championship on the final day of the season.

Ed Joyce has since stepped down as captain but Robinson says he is “massively motivated” to guide Sussex to an instant return to the top division.

Robinson has been in charge at Hove since taking over from Peter Moores in October 2005 and led Sussex to two Championship titles as well as the C&G Trophy in his first two years at the helm.

The Sharks went on to win the Twenty20 Cup in 2009 but have not picked up any more silverware since apart from the division two title in 2010.

Robinson is adamant he remains the right man to plot Sussex’s return to division one but accepts changes are needed following the disappointment of last season.

Robinson said: “I’ve been here for ten years now and last season was my first poor year. There are no guarantees we can come straight back up but I am massively motivated to do that.

“We are always looking at how we go about things and the changes we can make. We have got to look at everything we do within the club to find ways we can improve.

“We did that a bit during last season so it is a case of making sure we see what we all can do better as individuals.

“The goal next season is obviously to come straight back up but there are some good teams in division two who will all be fighting for the same thing.”

Robinson has already begun planning for next season after releasing Chris Liddle, Ashar Zaidi and Steffan Piolet last week while a new captain is expected to be announced in the next few days The Sussex coach would like to bring in a number of new signings over the winter to reinforce a squad which was ravaged by injury last summer but his options are limited by budget restrictions.

He added: “The biggest problem we are going to have is the budget. There was an increase in the playing budget last year after four years in which it stood still but now it has gone back down again.

“It is nothing to do with relegation but it means we are going to have to try to strengthen the squad in areas we feel we can with less money and CJ (Chris Jordan) coming off a central contract makes things more difficult.

“We get great backing from the board who try to give us what we need whenever they can but we have to respect that the most important thing is that the club survives.”
