Ollie Robinson has been tipped to keep on improving after signing a new three-year deal at Sussex.

The county have moved quickly to secure the services of Robinson until 2018 after he far exceeded all expectations since arriving at Hove on a short-term contract in April.

The 21-year-old all-rounder had been without a county since being sacked by Yorkshire last July for “unprofessional actions” but was thrown straight in at the deep end due to Sussex’s injury crisis.

Robinson went on to take 60 wickets in total – 46 in the Championship and 14 in the NatWest T20 Blast – while also scoring a century on his first class debut at Durham.

His performances saw him crowned as Sussex’s young player of the year while also earning nominations for the LV Breakthrough Player award and PCA young player of the year award.

The former Kent youngster achieved it despite persistent problems with his shins which prevented him from training for a large part of the season.

Coach Mark Robinson is delighted to have secured the services of one of the most exciting prospects in the country for the next three years as Sussex bid to bounce back from relegation to division two of the Championship.

And he feels Robinson can continue to develop at Hove once he has a full pre-season under his belt this winter and returns fully fit in the spring.

The Sussex coach said: “Ollie made a fantastic impact last year, impressing everybody with his control as a bowler and potential as a batter.

“There is a lot more to come from Ollie and we look forward to watching him develop over the next few years.”

Robinson finished as Sussex’s second leading wicket taker in both the Championship and NatWest T20 Blast despite missing a number of games due to injury.

He also underlined his ability with the bat by writing his name in the Sussex record books on his debut when he put on 164 with Matt Hobden against Durham to eclipse the previous highest stand for the tenth wicket set in 1908 by George Cox Snr and Harry Butt.

The all-rounder said:“I’m absolutely thrilled with the new deal and very much looking forward to what my future with Sussex has to hold. With the young, up and coming squad that we have working together it is, and will continue to be, a great time to be at the club.”

Robinson is the first of Sussex’s out of contract players to agree new terms with Chris Liddle, Ashar Zaidi and Steffan Piolet having been released. Will Beer and Matt Machan are expected to follow Robinson by staying at Hove but a decision on Jimmy Anyon will not be made until January after he missed the entire season through injury.
