Luke Wright is hoping to use his global contacts to help Sussex land another overseas gem.

The Sussex skipper has held talks with new head coach Mark Davis to discuss the type of player they want to bring to Hove once Steve Magoffin finally receives his UK passport.

Sussex had lined up a spinner midway through last season to bolster their fight against relegation only for the deal to be scuppered by delays in processing Magoffin’s paperwork, with English counties restricted to one overseas player in the Championship.

The priorities have since changed following the arrival of spinner Danny Briggs from Hampshire last month with Davis stating that a hard-hitting batsman or batting all-rounder is now top of the shopping list.

Sussex also want someone to be available throughout the whole summer to play in all three formats but the calibre of the player they are able to attract could be governed by financial constraints in the wake of budget cuts.

Wright has already begun sounding out candidates who he knows from his time in the IPL and Big Bash, as well as the international scene, and hopes his influence will help attract someone capable of having a similar impact to Magoffin and, before him, Mushtaq Ahmed.

He said: “Davo (Mark Davis) and I have a clear idea of what we want. If the right batsman comes up then we would be very interested but it is always hard finding people who will be available for the whole season due to commitments with the IPL and Caribbean Premier League.

“We want someone who can play the maximum number of games and who also won’t cost and arm and a leg as we simply don’t have the funds. We are still waiting to find out exactly what the budget is so we know what we can go and get but we’ve already started sounding a few players out.

“The nice thing about playing around the world as I have is that I know a lot of players and am able to get in contact with them. We have identified a few players but they have got to be the right fit for us and obviously come at the right price.

“Fingers crossed we can get something done early as I would like to have it settled as soon as possible so we can continue planning for next season.”

Sussex pulled a rabbit out of the hat when they signed Magoffin on the eve of the 2012 season.

Few had heard of the seamer outside of Australia but he has gone on to become one of the most prolific bowlers in county cricket, taking 261 Championship wickets in his four seasons at Hove while also scoring valuable runs down the order.

Wright, who took over as captain in all formats from Ed Joyce following Sussex’s relegation to division two of the Championship, added: “We have been told Mags’ passport will come through at any time and to have him as a local player will be like having two overseas players. That is important as we want to keep adding quality to the squad.

“It will be hard to find another player like Mags out there. He was something of an unknown quantity when we brought him in but those kind of players are hard to find now as there is so much information out there and the rules on qualification are harder too.”
