Sussex duo Luke Wright and Chris Jordan will compete in the inaugural Pakistan Super League next year after being bought on the first day of the player draft yesterday.

Batsman Wright will join forces with his Big Bash League team-mate Kevin Pietersen again at the Quetta Gladiators while all-rounder Jordan was picked up by Peshawar Zalmi where he will play alongside Shahid Afridi and Darren Sammy.

Pietersen was the only England-qualified player granted platinum status – and the accompanying $140,000 (£94,000) pay packet – as James Anderson and Ian Bell went unselected on day one of the draft.

Sussex skipper Wright was the Gladiators’ sixth pick as a $70,000 (£47,000) diamond player while Jordan was also a diamond player as he was picked up in the sixth round by Peshawar.

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle was picked by the Lahore Qalandars while the Karachi Kings made Mohammad Amir the first of their gold picks as he continues his return from a five-year ban for spot-fixing.

Sussex paceman Tymal Mills – who was listed as a gold player – was not selected along with the likes of Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Tim Bresnan, Michael Carberry, James Tredwell, Paul Collingwood, Samit Patel, Jade Dernbach and Boyd Rankin.

Other England-qualified players to be picked up at the draft in Lahore were Ravi Bopara (Karachi Kings), James Vince (Karachi Kings) and Jim Allenby (Peshawar Zalmi).

Sussex duo Matt Machan and Ajmal Shahzad – both silver players – will enter the draft on the second and final day today along with former Hove favourites Chris Liddle, Monty Panesar and Murray Goodwin – who officially retired last September and is now aged 43.

The Pakistan Super League takes place in February in Dubai and Sharjah and clashes with the limited-overs leg of England’s tour of South Africa which could mean that Jordan has to withdraw if he retains his place in Trevor Bayliss’s squad.
