Michael Yardy will be Sussex under-17 head coach for the 2016 season.

Former Sussex captain Yardy, who retired from professional cricket at the end of last season after spending two decades with the club, will oversee four ECB One-Day Cup matches, and four ECB three-day Championship matches with the under-17 side.

He will also coach within the Sussex Academy programme, as well as mentoring a number of the Academy’s players throughout the year.

Sussex’s new director of cricket Keith Greenfield said: “I’ve been looking to get Yards into our coaching structure as soon as it became clear he was going to retire from playing.

“This is absolutely fantastic news for our elite young players and our development pathway. He represents everything that is good within Sussex Cricket and his experiences and expertise in all formats is invaluable.

“This is an important part of our cricket strategy moving forward, as we look to maximise the expertise in all fields we have within the county.”

Yardy said: “I'm very excited to work with an exciting crop of young players and will look to help them fulfil their potential in whatever way I can and go onto to be future stars of Sussex cricket.”
