Mark Davis believes Sussex have landed one of world cricket’s top prospects in Mustafizur Rahman.

Rahman joins New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor as Sussex’s second overseas signing for the NatWest T20 Blast having exploded on to the international scene with Bangladesh over the last 12 months.

The 20-year-old left-arm seamer took 4-37 on his Test debut against South Africa and took a five-wicket haul on his ODI bow against India last June having previously starred in the Under-19 World Cup in 2014. Davis said: “I am really excited to have Mustafizur join us at Sussex. He is a cricketer with incredible ability and is currently one of the bright young talents of world cricket.

“His unorthodox bowling variations make him a very difficult customer to bat against and he will be a brilliant addition to our team.”

Rahman has been a sensation since breaking into the Bangladesh team but his progress has been blighted by injury recently.

He missed the Pakistan Super League last month due to a recurring shoulder problem and pulled out of the Asia Cup this week after suffering a side strain in the win over Sri Lanka on Sunday but is expected to be fit for the World Twenty20 later this month.

Rahman will be available for the whole of Sussex’s Twenty20 campaign and will stay at Hove until late August meaning he will take over from Taylor as overseas player for the County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup once the Kiwi departs at the end of July.

He is due to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League in April and could miss Sussex’s opening match against Gloucestershire at Hove on Friday May 20 if they reach the knockout stages of the competition.

Rahman - who will be the first Bangladesh international to play for Sussex - said: “I am very excited to get an opportunity in county cricket.

“It has always been an ambition of mine to play in England and I am thankful to Sussex for this opportunity. I hope I can repay the faith they have shown in me with my performances on the field.”
