A couple of weeks ago I criticised the ECB’s decision to ditch the toss in the County Championship.
But after seeing the scores in the opening two rounds of matches I am happy to eat my words.
Okay, a couple of groundsmen have over-compensated and there have been big scores but there has been no games finishing inside two days which we had become far too used to seeing at this time of the year.
The match between Sussex and Essex this week was a ringing endorsement for the changes.
It was a great game which was beautifully set up going into the final day and ended in a hard-fought draw so full credit to Andy Mackay and his team at Hove.
I still think it is a shame to lose the tradition of the toss but if it produces the kind of cricket the public want to see then it is a sacrifice worth making.
