When will cricketers learn that playing football as part of their warm-up is a bad idea.

I'm sure Hampshire won't be doing it again after West Indies paceman Fidel Edwards broke his leg in a kickabout at the Ageas Bowl last week.

This may sound hypocritical as we used to enjoy getting the football out in my time at Sussex but in this day and age I just think it's crazy.

I remember being hauled in front of the committee at Hove after Richard Montgomerie was ruled out of a big quarter-final against Lancashire having turned his ankle playing touch rugby and Peter Moores banning football after Ian Ward made a particularly dangerous sliding tackle one morning before a game.

A bit of keepy-uppy might be okay or some gentle passing but too often these things get competitive and the results can be disastrous.

I'm heading to the Amex on Monday to see Albion's game against Derby and it would be unthinkable if Tomer Hemed and his team-mates came out with some stumps and a bat for a quick game of cricket before kick-off so why do cricketers play football.
