On the face of it Sussex’s fifth draw in five Championship games at Worcestershire this week does not look too much to get excited about.

But I believe their refusal to wave the white flag at New Road despite being on the backfoot since day one could turn out to be a pivotal moment for coach Mark Davis and his team.

Character is such an important quality in sport and Sussex showed that in abundance as they dug in as a batting unit. It may only have earned them an extra five points but it proved there is plenty of fight and desire in the squad which was great to see.

It was also encouraging to see youngsters like of Harry Finch and Stuart Whittingham grasping their opportunity with both hands and they will only grow from being exposed to such a pressurised situation.

I’m also really pleased for Davo as he’s had such a difficult start to his time as head coach what with losing captain Luke Wright through injury and then seeing star all-rounder Chris Jordan go off to India.

Things might not have gone quite as he would have wanted on the pitch so far but I would urge everyone not to judge him on results alone. It is more about the journey this season for Sussex as they take stock and bring through young players.

That’s not to say they should give up on promotion already, far from it. It’s still early days in the season and you only need to string together two or three wins and suddenly the table can look very different.

Hopefully that final day at Worcestershire can prove the turning point.
