I'm going to be deliberately controversial and urge England to drop James Anderson for the second Test today.

That may sound like the ravings of a mad-man after he took ten wickets to send Sri Lanka hurtling towards an emphatic defeat at Old Trafford but hear me out.

There is absolutely no way England aren't going to win this series so why don't we experiment a little bit?

Chris Woakes is set to replace the injured Ben Stokes at Durham but I'd like to see Jake Ball given an opportunity to show what he could do. If that means resting Stuart Broad or Anderson who were both brilliant in the second Test then so be it.

That way we would keep the jewels of our bowling attack fresh for the summer and it would enhance our aim of developing a battery of fast bowlers who are ready to step in at Test level.

I know it won't happen. Anderson and Broad will both play and probably skittle Sri Lanka cheaply again but in my opinion it will be a missed opportunity. Only if he is thrust into the spotlight will we know if Ball can handle everything that goes with international cricket.
