Chris Nash and Ed Joyce helped put Sussex in a strong position to push for their first win of the season in the County Championship.

The pair put on an unbroken stand of 91 for the opening wicket on the second morning at Hove with Nash reaching 50 for the fourth time this season.

That left Sussex trailing Derbyshire by just 59 after Steve Magoffin had wrapped up the visitors’ innings for 150 in the fourth over of the day.

Magoffin had Ben Cotton caught behind for five to give him figures of 4-23 and Shiv Thakor stranded on 47.

Nash and Joyce quickly set about making inroads into such a paltry total with Nash hitting eight boundaries on his way to a half century from 76 balls.

Joyce also continued his fine form this season as he reached lunch unbeaten on 38.
