Tymal Mills is determined to grab his big chance after completing an amazing turnaround in fortunes by earning an England call-up.

The Sussex fast bowler feared his career could be cut short when he was diagnosed with a congenital back condition last season but has bounced back in spectacular fashion to catch the eye of the national selectors.

Mills is joined in the England squad for the solitary Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka at the Rose Bowl on July 5 by Sussex team-mate Chris Jordan who is also in the 14-man party for the five-match 50-over series which precedes it.

The 23-year-old has been in sparkling form for the Sharks in the NatWest T20 Blast this season having been forced to focus solely on the shortest format of the game after warnings from doctors that he could suffer serious spinal damage unless he retired from first class cricket.

Mills said: “I found out on Saturday and it was the nicest phone call you can receive. It’s still a few weeks away but I can’t wait for the chance to show what I can do in an England shirt.

“It’s been a very long year. Twelve months ago I was potentially going to retire but this makes all the hard work I have put in to get where I am today worthwhile.

“It took me a while to get my head around the fact I couldn’t play four-day cricket ever again and although that was tough to take it has allowed me to focus all my efforts into becoming the best Twenty20 bowler I can be.

“It is every cricketers dream to play for their country so hopefully I will get the opportunity. England don’t play many Twenty20 games so if I do get selected then I want to go out there and show off and have some fun.”

Mills has enhanced his reputation as the fastest bowler in the country by regularly exceeding 90mph in Sussex’s televised games against Somerset and Kent at Hove - including bowling West Indies star Chris Gayle with a 93mph yorker - but he insists he still has room for improvement.

“I’ve had some really good games this season but I was poor against Surrey so that was a reality check,” added Mills. “I wasn’t pleased with how I bowled in that game so it was nice to come back and do well against Kent but the next step is to be more consistent.”

Jordan’s selection was expected but could dent Sussex’s hopes of building on their encouraging start to the NatWest T20 Blast to qualify for the knockout stages.

The all-rounder is likely to miss the games against Gloucestershire, Kent and Middlesex while on England duty along with the Championship matches against Northamptonshire and Glamorgan.
