England’s series victory over Sri Lanka threw up more questions than answers for me.

You can only beat what is in front of you but even against a limited team there were very obvious cracks in England’s top order while we learned nothing new in the bowling department.

Both Nick Compton and James Vince will be sweating on their places for the series against Pakistan next month. To be honest I think Compton’s time is probably up but I’d like to see Vince given another chance to prove he has what it takes.

I’ve got some sympathy for Compton as playing two Tests in May at venues like Durham and Headingley is not ideal when you are trying to establish yourself in the team. Having said that Jonny Bairstow showed that it was still possible to make runs if you are in form and have the right approach.

Compton’s had two stabs at Test cricket now and hasn’t convinced so it’s time for him to step aside. The jury is still out on Vince but the lack of batsmen hammering on the door from county cricket means he should survive.

Adam Lyth is probably the first in line to take Compton’s place. He was found out a little bit when he broke into the side for the first time last year but has gone away and made runs for Yorkshire so deserves another opportunity.

I remember when I had a brief taste of Test cricket and then lost my place that it drove me on to improve. I was definitely a much better player in the years after playing for England but unfortunately for me my second chance never came.

Lyth deserves another shot at proving that he has ironed out the weaknesses in his game. He was exposed around off stump by New Zealand and Australia last year so it will be interesting to see if he has overcome that problem or not.

On the bowling front James Anderson and Stuart Broad proved they are still one of the best new-ball pairs around but we knew that anyway.

Chris Woakes did his prospects no harm while Steve Finn continues to struggle but we still have no idea whether Jake Ball is ready for Test cricket which in my eyes was a huge missed opportunity.
