Stuart Whittingham has been tipped to become the next young Sussex bowler to earn international honours.

Whittingham has burst through into the first team at Hove this season and highlighted his potential by taking career-best figures of 4-58 in the Championship game against Glamorgan last week.

The 22-year-old has competed for a place in the four-day team with fellow academy graduate George Garton, 19, who was called-up to the England Lions squad last week for the forthcoming tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka A teams.

Whittingham has only played six first class games after signing his first professional contract in November but skipper Luke Wright has already seen enough to be convinced he can go on to play for his country one day.

Wright said: “I thought Stuart was outstanding against Glamorgan. It was my first chance to see him up close and he’s very, very exciting.

“Ross Taylor had one of best seats in the house at first slip against Glamorgan and he said how impressed he was with him. He didn’t just look like a first class bowler but someone England could look at if he keeps going like that.

“He bowls fast and swings it so he looks a serious find. He’s got to keep working hard but the nice thing about Stuart is that he learns so fast and is getting better game on game.”
