Chris Jordan is hungry for runs to help him win his England place back.

The Sussex all-rounder goes into today’s final Championship game of the season at Gloucestershire with a point to prove after being left out of the squad for England’s tour to Bangladesh this winter.

Jordan’s exclusion from the party which will play three ODIs in Bangladesh comes despite having followed up his maiden first class century at Essex last month with three consecutive 50s for Sussex.

The 27-year-old – who batted at No.10 or No.11 for England in their limited overs games against Pakistan this summer – knows he must continue to pile up the runs if he is to force his way back into the national set-up.

Jordan said: “I am pleased with the way I am batting at the moment.

“I always want to do it in winning situations and unfortunately I couldn’t do that last week (against Worcestershire) but on the whole I do feel in good order with the bat. I’ve had a century and three 50s in my last four innings so from a consistency point of view that is what I have been aiming to do.

“I know I can bat. I’ve opened the batting in the past in first class cricket which speaks volumes but it has just been a matter of finding a way to put those numbers on the board and be recognised as a real genuine all-rounder which is what I am aiming to do.

“Hopefully I can continue in that vein and see where I get to. As a whole I feel my game is in good order so it is a matter of keeping building on that and improving because at England level the competition for places is very high so I need to stay on top of my game.”

Jordan is averaging 76 with the bat in division two this season compared to an overall first class average of 24 and believes his improvement is more mental than anything technical.

“I’ve got a slightly different mindset,” he added. “It is all about my tempo and the way I switch on and off between balls.

“That can come with experience. The ability has always been there so I need to keep backing myself and see where I get to.

“Obviously my aim is to get back into the England plans but I know to do that I need to play well at county level. Every time I put on Sussex shirt I try to put in a good performance and then let everything else take care of itself.”
