Chris Jordan insists the best is yet to come after committing his future to Sussex.

Jordan has signed a one-year contract extension which will keep him at Hove until the end of the 2018 season.

The 28-year-old all-rounder enjoyed a fine 2016 campaign as he shone with bat and ball for both club and country Jordan made his maiden first class century when he hit a brilliant 131 against Essex and also made career-best scores in the NatWest T20 Blast (45 not out) and Royal London One Day Cup (55). The England international also eclipsed his previous best figures with the ball in Twenty20 internationals (4-28), domestic T20 (4-11) and List A cricket (5-28).

Jordan said: “I always like to take the positives but by my own standards I would have liked to be slightly better at different times throughout last summer. Hopefully I can build on what I achieved last season and better it next season.

“I can’t get ahead of myself. There are still have plenty of areas in my game I want to improve so the aim in the coming months is to do that and make another jump in terms of my performances.”

Jordan has been a revelation since joining Sussex from Surrey four years ago having previously struggled to fulfil his potential at the Oval.

He was called up to the England squad for the first time at the end of his debut season at Hove and has gone on to win 58 caps across the three formats.

The Barbadian is likely to add to that tally when he links up with the national side for their Twenty20 series against India in January having warmed up by playing for Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League over the next month.

Jordan only signed a new one-year extension back in March but is excited by the potential of the young team Mark Davis is building at Hove and is keen to be a part of it as Sussex bid to end their eight-year wait for a trophy next season.

He added: “Since I arrived at the club back in 2013, I’ve been made to feel so welcome. I’ve gone from strength to strength and it’s a club that really feels like home now.

“I’m glad to be signing on for another year to hopefully help the club win some silverware in the coming seasons.

“As a team, we’re in a little bit of a transitional period but the philosophy that the club has and the plans that Mark Davis and the team are implementing are moving us in the right direction.”

“I think the future is really bright. We saw the likes of Jofra (Archer) last season who really showed his class with both bat and ball. We’ve also got players like Stuart Whittingham so I’m looking forward to working with them going forward.

“Hopefully I can help them out a little bit. Every little bit of knowledge I got at that age I was very grateful for so if they come to me I’ll be more than happy to help.”

Jordan is the latest player to commit his future to Sussex after Archer, Phil Salt and Luke Wells agreed new contracts this winter while the county have also signed South Africans Stiaan van Zyl and Vernon Philander.

Head coach Davis said: “CJ is such a valuable player for Sussex in all forms.

“To have him sign a new contract is brilliant for us as we embark on developing a strong team for the future. He is not only a fantastic cricketer but an important role model for our youngsters.”
