Stiaan van Zyl believes Sussex can get on a roll after picking up their first win of the season.

The former South Africa batsman made 96 to help guide the Sharks to an emphatic win over Glamorgan in the Royal London One-Day Cup at Hove yesterday.

Sussex shrugged off a disappointing start to the summer by bowling the visitors out for 221 to seal a 60-run victory which boosts their hopes of qualifying from the South Group.

It was only the county’s second win in 50-over cricket since August 2014 but van Zyl is confident they can use a convincing display against Glamorgan as a platform to build on having picked up just one point from their opening two group games.

He said: “It’s been a difficult start since I joined the club which is why I think this win is great for us. It has come at the right time and, hopefully, we can carry on this momentum and pick up some wins.

“It is important to get on a winning streak.

“If you win then you go onto the park for the next game with more confidence and automatically can start going through the gears.

“Hopefully everything will start to click for us now and we can get on a bit of a roll.”

Van Zyl had made just 80 runs from his first five innings for Sussex but showed his class yesterday by hitting seven fours and two sixes in his 88-ball innings.

He added: “I felt unlucky not to get a hundred but it was more important to help the team to get the win. t is good to get some runs under my belt and hopefully I can carry that momentum into the next few games.”
