Luke Wells has told of his delight at trumping his dad – and Brian Lara.

The Sussex batsman rattled up a career best 258 in his first Championship innings since knee surgery.

He shared in a partnership of 376 with fellow centurion Stiaan van Zyl to put Sussex well on top against Durham at Hove.

Then he went off to check he had beaten the mark set by dad Alan during a stellar career which saw him captain Sussex and play for England.

Wells senior was at the ground on Sunday – but not yesterday.

His son, right, said: “He wasn’t here but I think I’ve just trumped his top score.

“It was 253 and I’ve always wanted to try and beat him on something!

“I’ve got quite a few first-class runs to go but I think I’ve got him on the highest score now.

“Our phones are locked away from us because a few guys used them a bit too much – but I’m sure I’ve got a few messages.

“I’ve always known his top score. Mark Robinson was in the opposition back then. It was cool to beat it.”

The partnership was a third-wicket record against Durham, passing that set by Warwickshire 23 years ago which featured Lara’s famous innings of 501 not out.

Sussex will now push for a first Championship win of the season against a Durham attack missing star seamer Graham Onions, who has a back problem.
