Sussex could throw Laurie Evans into red-ball action as they aim to move into a promotion place.

The former Warwickshire man, widely viewed as a limited-overs specialist, comes into the 14 to face Northants today as the Specsavers County Championship division two race moves to the business end.

He will look to make a belated impact after scoring just 11 runs in four early-season Championship innings.

Evans was a regular in the NatWest T20 Blast but was injured in the Royal London One-Day Cup group stage and has not featured in four-day action since April.

He is included after making a century for the 2nd XI in a three-day friendly against Hampshire at Horsham last week.

His selection is in line with that of eventual matchwinner Ollie Robinson at Colwyn Bay last week.

Robinson was called in after skipper Ben Brown monitored his efforts in the second team.

Harry Finch is omitted from the party at Wantage Road.

Head coach Davis said: “We travel to Northampton with the team in good form having won the last six of our eight Championship games.

“There is all to play for as the season goes into the final month.

“The boys are excited by the challenge ahead and will be leaving nothing behind in the last four games of the year”.

The two counties above Sussex – Nottinghamshire (204 points) and Worcestershire (172 points) – meet each other in this round of games.

Both have three matches left in total while Sussex (153 points) still have four to play.

Kent, whose last four games are against sides outside the race, are still in contention.

Sussex squad: Brown, Archer, Beer, Briggs, Evans, Jordan, Nash, Robinson, Robson, van Zyl, Wells, Whittingham , Wiese, Wright.
