Sussex’s 50-overs campaign is over after they lost by four wickets to Essex at Eastbourne today.

Needing a win plus a freak set of results from other games if they were to go into the knockout stage, Sharks went down with 12 balls remaining before almost 5,000 spectators at The Saffrons.

Laurie Evans helped the hosts set 281-7 off their 50 overs with an astutely paced 107 after early wickets had tumbled.

The Argus:

Chris Jordan (35) and Jofra Archer (33 not out) added quick late runs as the hosts plundered 63 from the final five overs.

But Essex, for whom Tom Westley made 88 and Adam Wheater 60, always looked on course in reply.

Archer, back in the county after IPL duties, was arguably the pick of the home attack with 2-53 from his ten overs.

But a trio of wickets late on did little to disguise the comfortable nature of Essex’s win.
