Rayner helps seconds win

Ollie Rayner took 2-44 and then hit an unbeaten 78 as Sussex strengthened their challenge for the 2nd XI One-Day Trophy with a convincing win over Northamptonshire.

Sussex, chasing a target of 263 at Hove, clinched victory by four wickets with Rayner scoring his runs off only 69 balls with six fours and two sixes.

Former Middlesex pace bowler Chad Keegan claimed 3-38 in eight overs after Northamptonshire won the toss and leg spinner Will Beer’s ten overs brought him 3-45.

Steve Crook top-scored for Northamptonshire with 60 and wicketkeeper David Murphy made 55.

Michael Thornely got Sussex’s reply off to a lively start by thumping 45 off 39 balls, including ten fours, and wicketkeeper Ben Brown also played a useful role by composing 64 from 72 balls with five boundaries.
