Joe Gatting struck an unbeaten 103 to help Sussex build a lead of 268 going into the final day of their 2nd XI championship match against Northamptonshire.
Gatting shared in an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 94 with Luke Wells (32) as Sussex reached 186-3 in their second innings at Hove.
Former Albion striker Gatting hit 11 fours and two sixes from 138 balls after Northamptonshire declared 82 behind Sussex on 301-2.
Alex Wakely hit 115 not out for the visitors, who were 28-1 overnight, helping himself to 15 fours and two sixes in his 148-ball innings.
Australian left-arm fast bowler Allan Wise, who is on trial with Sussex, failed to add to the wicket of opener Stephen Peters the night before in finishing with 1-49 from 14 overs.
Ben Hongego helped Northamptonshire’s cause by hitting 92, with 15 fours off 142 balls, and Riki Wessels, son of former Sussex star Kepler Wessels, finished unbeaten on 68 which contained 11 fours from only 74 deliveries.
