Coach Mark Robinson believes Sussex will reach the semi-finals of the Clydesdale Bank 40 if they can win their remaining four Group A games.

It is a tall order with home-and-away matches against Surrey Lions, starting at Guildford tomorrow (1.45pm), as well as home matches against leaders Somerset and Glamorgan Dragons, who beat the Sharks a fortnight ago.

But Robinson says Tuesday’s successful chase under lights at Old Trafford has infused the squad with confidence. Chasing 245 on a wicket offering lots of turn and under sub-standard lights, Joe Gatting led the Sharks to victory with 71, his highest score of the season, in a four-wicket win.

Robinson said: “We got the rough end of a lot of things, especially losing the toss, but it was an outstanding chase with Joe playing a great innings.

“It has given us some confidence and we win our last four then we would be disappointed not to get into the semis.

“We are the defending champions and we are not giving up on this competition yet.”

Will Adkin, who is not even on the staff, and Chris Liddle have both been added to the squad.

Adkin, a 6ft 10 seamer, made an impressive first-team debut against Bangladesh last month with a wicket with his first ball while Liddle is on the comeback trail after a second successive season interrupted by ankle problems.

With Luke Wright rested there is an opportunity for either of them to play if conditions suit an extra seamer rather than a second spinner.

Robinson added: “It would be nice to play both but we are not at the stage yet in this competition where there is nothing to play for.

“Lidds obviously gives us an option as a left-armer and I have seen a lot of Will in the seconds in recent weeks and he is making good progress.”

Sussex will overtake their rivals and move into second place if they win but Surrey are in good form having made a record 40 overs score of 383-3 in their win over Glamorgan on Wednesday, although they only batted 38 overs.

It included a maiden one-day hundred for skipper and former Sussex all-rounder Rory Hamilton-Brown.

He said: “It was nice to reach that milestone but the most satisfying thing was a win for Surrey.

“I feel we have come a long way in the last six weeks as a side and on our day we can be as good as anyone.

“What we haven’t always done is back up a good performance in the next game and we need to do that on Sunday, it is a must-win game.”
