Sidebottom will not be joining Sussex

Sussex target Ryan Sidebottom is to leave Nottinghamshire but the England fast bowler is not heading to Hove.

After weeks of negotiations, Sidebottom has opted to quit Trent Bridge at the end of the season. The 32-year-old was holding out for a three-year contract to cover the likely withdrawal of his England central contract but Nottinghamshire have refused to budge on their offer of a two-year deal.

Four counties, including Surrey, are keen to sign the left-armer but Sussex chief executive Dave Brooks has confirmed Sidebottom will not be joining them.

The county are keen to bring an experienced bowler into their squad following the retirement of Robin Martin-Jenkins and James Kirtley and they made an official approach to Kent last month to talk to Amjad Khan.

The 29-year-old, who played one Test and one ODI last year, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Cash-strapped Kent have told all their players they are free to talk to other counties with Surrey keen on all-rounder Darren Stevens and experienced batsman Martin van Jaarsveld.

Rumour has it that he wanted £150,000 a year. I'm afraid cricket is going the same way as football ,the best players going to the bank rolled clubs .Surprise surprise Hants & Surrey are chasing him.We need to strengthen in the bowling department to compete in the 1st division. Not sure if signing Knan from Kent is a good idea ,to injury prone for my liking.
