Goodwin puts Sussex in strong position

A fourth Championship century of the season from Murray Goodwin put Sussex in a strong position at the end of the opening day of their final division one match at Trent Bridge.

Goodwin shared in century stands with Ed Joyce (63) and Matt Machan (71) and will resume this morning on 117 not out.

Machan played well on his Championship debut but the 20-year-old fell late in the day and Ben Brown followed soon after for a duck as Sussex closed on 312-6 after being put in by Nottinghamshire.

Well done Sussex for proving me wrong and winning another match this season. It was an excellent fightback against Worcestershire after a less than promising start. However, and there was bound to be a however after our second half slump, there are many issues to be resolved before the start of next season. With the notable exceptions of Monty and Anyon, our bowling lacks penetration. We need someone who can take early wickets. And God knows where our batting will be if and when Murray Goodwin decides to call it a day. I don't know how much Robbo can do to change things given the current contract situation; it's a shame we missed out on Rikki Clarke. But one thing's for sure - we're going to need a much bigger contribution from our overseas star or stars next year. Parnell and Gul proved to be major disappointments. Hopefully, Luke Wright will be fit enough to play a whole year as he brings much-needed balance to the side.

Agree Bruce, well done Matt.

Joe Denly is out of contract soon, a young player who might be useful to us.

The seam bowling has been a major problem which needs addressing quickly, cut out the dross and get in some better quickies. Also, it seems Raynor and Beer will not be getting a chance, shame, as Will has got both wickets and runs for the "stiffs" and Ollie does have a bit of go about him.
Why Doesn't Yards bowl in league games? Surely it would take the pressure off Monty together with Nashie bowling too.

Seems there might be some Yorks players available after comments from their Chairman.

Yardy doesn't bowl in the longer version of the game because Monty and Nasher are far more likely to take wickets. I'm happy for him to concentrate on his batting and captaincy and leave the bowling to others.

Agree with the comments above apart from Ryfish,I think Yardy should introduce himself occassionally and he is just as likely to take wickets as Nash and Panesar. Well done to Sussex for avoiding relegation and agree an overhaul is required, add Vincent to the overseas contingent that have been pretty dire.
I expect Ryfish will bite again but I see Gatting and Brown are back to normal, both out for ducks. Also
suspect Goodwin won't be back next season.
On another note I see Chris Adams has achieved promotion with Surrey,it seems he is following in the Sussex mould of getting a quality spinner in who has just taken 10 wickets and been prolific in the last 4 matches that they have won, shades of Mushy.
Nice to see Machan get a chance and do well.
